SGAC vs visa: what's the difference?

The Singapore Arrival Card is not a visa. They're two separate things, and many travellers need both.

Do I need a visa?

Singapore is generous with visa exemptions. Travellers from most major countries can visit without a visa for short stays.

Common visa-exempt

All EU member states, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, most South American and Caribbean countries, many African countries.

Common visa-required

China (mainland), India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, most Middle Eastern countries (with exceptions), some African nations.

This list isn't exhaustive and ICA updates the rules occasionally. Check ICA's official visa requirements page or ask your nearest Singapore embassy if you're unsure.

Do I need an SGAC?

Yes, almost certainly. The SGAC is mandatory regardless of your visa status.

A common misunderstanding: "I'm visa-exempt, so I don't need to do anything before arrival." Wrong. Visa-exempt travellers still need an SGAC. The exemption applies to the visa requirement only, not to the arrival declaration.

See who needs to submit for the full list and the rare exceptions.

How to get a Singapore visa

If you need a visa:

  • Apply through the Singapore embassy or consulate in your country, or
  • Use an authorized e-visa agent

Two of our partner sites specialize in Singapore visa applications:

Both are independent companies under separate brands. SGAC Online focuses only on the arrival card.

Once your visa is approved

You still need an SGAC. Your visa lets you enter Singapore. The SGAC declares when you'll arrive and where you'll stay. They're complementary, not interchangeable.

Apply for your SGAC inside the 72-hour pre-arrival window. We can file it for you for USD 30 per traveller, or you can do it yourself for free at ICA's website.
